What to do with scraps, I mused? I know! I'll make bookmarks! And I'll write whimsical or cheeky fortunes, and print them on the back of each one!
I started making these for Art-O-Mat, a company that reconditions old cigarette vending machines to dispense art. (Brilliant, right? Here's a link to their website where you can find where all these machines are located: artomat.org)
The front of each bookmark is sewn oilcloth (from my scraps), and the back is a piece of hand-dyed cotton fabric printed with a fortune. Edges are clean-finished, and a piece of bamboo or hemp twine is attached to the top. Each bookmark comes in a colorful, sealed paper envelope, as pictured. Each bookmark is approximately 2" w x 8" long.
Great for gifts, stocking stuffers, party favors, or just a random attitude adjustment for yourself.
