This is rule #6 from Corita Kent when she taught at Immaculate Heart College Art Department in the 1960s. A small poster of “the rules” lives in my studio most of the time, but I took it with me to Taos last week. Here are all the rules, at least for today. (More about the rules in a future newsletter!)
I don’t go to Taos to reinvent myself or to become someone I’m not. My time there reminds me of who I am outside of the pressure of the daily grind, away (mostly) from distractions.
Art thrives with focus and the freedom to experiment.
It helps me (and you, probably) discover new truths, or rediscover old truths we’ve forgotten.

Our summer has felt topsy-turvy with all the travel, the smoke from wildfires that has kept us cooped up inside when we arehome, and both the general malaise and hypervigilance so many of us are experiencing.
On the other hand, my studio hasn’t been this clean in a while, as I sift and discard, set priorities and make lists, while waiting for the smoke to clear.
The sun wakes me up early, and I think about things: projects, house stuff, family and friends, the state of the world, and what’s for dinner.
