Years ago, I unintentionally started a series of yellow pieces; almost every year around the solstice I crave that color to cheer myself up on those long days of winter. Solar (above), finished a few years ago, includes a center section of fabric I printed using the deconstructed screen printing method pioneered by Kerr Grabowski. I find both the piece and the process captivating!
I’ve visited my friend Tony at the Peaks a few times recently. Yesterday I took printouts of some of his old essays from the Flagstaff Letter from Home column and read some of them aloud to him. (All 800+ columns are archived here.) I was curious to know if it would feel weird to read his writing aloud to him. Instead, it gave me a new appreciation for his storytelling ability. We laughed and wept about a few things, and it also triggered more (unwritten) stories from him.
Rather than wishing for a “happy new year”, I’m planning for 2026 to be a good year. Some things I can control, others not so much. We do what we can, and intention matters. My intention is to be the best human animal I can be (to misquote Barbara Kingsolver) and put as much love out into the world as I can muster.
