I won't lie - this summer has been all the things: lovely, idyllic, and also challenging on so many levels. (I gave myself my first-ever black eye this week, for example.) I thought I'd be taking more time off, but I spent quite a few hours relaunching TallulahArthead.com, making necessary upgrades and refinements. And some days just slip away, especially when I’m helping my mom and have only short gaps of time to (potentially) work.
I took the photo above just before moonrise in the Mohave Desert. Mike and I visited my brother-in-law in Berkeley, CA a few weeks ago, and the best half-way point to camp was in the (stinking hot) desert. (At our camp on the way there, it finally cooled down at about 2 am, and on the way home, the wind picked up at sunset and didn't let up for many hours.) But on the way home, I saw this glow on the horizon and was inspired. Sometimes, regardless of the circumstances, you can find beauty in the moment.
As I’ve been going through my studio, I’ve abandoned some of the old projects entirely, which is a big win for me. I generally hold tight to old projects, being too stubborn/cheap/egotistical to release them. There's a certain lightness in letting go, though, a feeling I could use a higher dose of these days.
But some things I can’t quite turn loose: years ago I cut a bunch of my scraps into 1.5" wide strips and started stitching them together. Not side by side, but end to end. (I know.) I then stitched that one long strip together, first two, then four, then eight, and so on. When I finished, I had a crazy, stringy, slightly wonky quilt top. I dyed a back for it, cut a big hunk of batting and stuck it in a closet, where it “aged". I finally got it out earlier last month and took it to someone to long-arm machine quilt. It came back last week, and I put the binding on, so it's now finished and ready to use!
If you have unfinished projects, what would it take for you to you either finish or release them?
